On 26th February, the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Museveni, presided over the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected President, Hon. Shillah Ainembabazi and the incoming National Executive Committee of the Uganda National Students’ Association (UNSA Uganda). The event, held in a spirit of celebration and national significance, was also attended by Col. Edith Nakalema, among other distinguished guests.

A Call to Purposeful Leadership

In her address to the newly sworn-in student leaders and the gathering of citizens, the First Lady delivered a powerful and timely message. She called upon all leaders—both young and seasoned—not to squander the platforms entrusted to them, but to move forward with unity and determination in the shared mission of building the nation.

“We must not return to confusion,” she urged, reminding those present that leadership carries a weight of responsibility that goes far beyond titles and positions.

Leadership Rooted in Faith and Humility

Hon. Maama Janet Museveni emphasized that true leadership is not built on ambition or self-interest, but is anchored in the fear of God, humility, and a deep respect for authority. She pointed to these values as the bedrock upon which effective and lasting governance is established—whether in student politics, civic service, or national leadership.

Her words served as a reminder that when leaders ground themselves in faith and integrity, the people they serve stand to benefit immensely.

Rejecting Division, Embracing Unity

The First Lady further urged leaders and citizens alike to honour one another, work as a team, and firmly reject sectarian politics based on tribe or religion. She noted that such divisions only serve to weaken the fabric of the nation and hinder the progress that every Ugandan deserves.

Instead, she called for a collective commitment to justice, peace, and national progress—values that transcend ethnic, religious, and political lines. Her message was clear: Uganda’s strength lies in its people’s ability to stand together, not apart.

A Charge to the Next Generation

The swearing-in of the new UNSA and NEC represents more than a ceremonial transition—it is a passing of the torch to a new generation of leaders who will shape the future of student governance and, ultimately, the broader trajectory of the nation. With the First Lady’s charge still fresh in their hearts, the incoming leadership has both the encouragement and the challenge to lead with purpose, integrity, and a spirit of service.
